Toby Israel

Toby Israel, Ph.D. is a former associate professor of architecture and psychology at the University of Lincoln (U.K.). Toby has worked as an environmental consultant in the USA and UK. She served as head of design research for LRK Architects and director of the Visual Arts Program for the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. In the latter position, she helped commission public art (the subject of her CUNY dissertation) for buildings throughout N.J.

In her book, Some Place Like Home: Using Design Psychology to Create Ideal Places. Toby announced the founding of Design Psychology, “the practice of architecture, planning and interior design in which psychology is the principle design tool.” Thus using a ‘design from within’ process, Toby has helped create deeply human homes, healthcare settings, schools and products including the ‘Robe to Wellness’ hospital gown for women undergoing radiation.

While usually lecturing nationally and internationally,  Toby conducts regular online workshops and is completing her next book on women and Design Psychology. On her mission to deeply connect people and place, she writes Psychology Today’s “Design on My Mind” blog and works directly with designers and clients. Her most rewarding project has been raising her son and daughter, both of whom now contribute to making the world a better place.
