Jennifer M. Pipitone is a doctoral candidate in the environmental psychology PhD program. Her research explores the human-environment relationship within the broader contexts of learning, growth, and experience. Jennifer’s work challenges displaced and disembodied views of the human-environment relationship by considering the interaction between physical, psychological, and sociocultural contexts of being and knowing.
Jennifer completed 7 weeks of grant-funded dissertation field research with two CUNY study abroad programs in Rabat, Morocco and Bali, Indonesia during the winter and summer 2014 semesters. Her dissertation aims to construct an emplaced and embodied framework of experiential learning by exploring the contextualized meaning students make of their experiences abroad and one year post-program. Jennifer’s Master’s research explored the production of therapeutic spaces on wilderness therapy programs.
During the summer of 2015, Jennifer was invited to serve as an international teaching fellow with the Bali study abroad program. She supervised 20 graduate and undergraduate students in the research component of the study abroad, including topics such as: how the Balinese define and navigate traumatic events; the relationship between Balinese aesthetics in spiritual and secular life; how the Balinese ‘do’ gender via comparative analysis of a traditionally all-male dance that has formed its first female dance troupe.
Currently, Jennifer is a Writing Fellow at Bronx Community College’s Writing Center and adjunct lecturer with John Jay’s Sustainability and Environmental Justice program minor. Previously, she has taught various courses across CUNY campuses and completed two years as a Graduate Research Fellow with the John Jay Research and Evaluation Center’s Evidence Generation Initiative and two years as Research Associate in Undergraduate Research at Hunter College where she led the Undergraduate Research Initiative fellowship program.
