Mariya’s Master thesis explores the intertwining between environmental destruction and social transformations due to mountaintop removal in Southern West Virginia. She conducted field research and in-depth interviews with residents near mountaintop removal sites about their lived experiences and perceptions of their changing environment.
As part of the Housing Environments Research Group, Mariya is co-authoring a paper exploring a shared equity housing model, Community Land Trust, promoting increased opportunities for affordable and sustainable low-income homeownership. Her focus is on processes of achieving home and social and material home-making practices.
Research Interests: Environmental justice, environmental politics, social and natural displacement due to natural and man-made disasters and landscape transformations, place attachment, place making
